Hello All -
I waited and waited? ?What!? Nobody mentioned that Weckl?s New Album is out!? AND NO HUMBLE OPINIONS!?? What is going on friends?? Perhaps Weck?s album has been eclipsed by the Altered release last week, which I will comment on in a paragraph or two.
Ok, Multiplicity is basically more of the same from Weckl. His blend of spices churns and churns. Same half-time shuffles, same well placed accents, same sax lead throughout. To me it seems that not many chances were taken, though the musicality is of course, top notch. Interestingly, the song that I dig the most is the least ?drumistic? which is the song ?Inner Vision? which is reminiscent of a few Corea tunes of the past. Very hypnotic and ethereal.
That seeming negative take aside, I always enjoy Dave?s drum sounds and the general mix of the entire album. Dave always produces several fills that make you stop and do a double take. The most notable example is in his solo on ?What It Is? He always makes it worth it.
Now, NOT TO COMPARE, but Altered?s ?Graphic? release is anything but safe. Very Edgy! The performances are all excellent, especially John Flitcraft who just stands out in every tune! There are musical chances being taken in every song by each of the guys. Steve?s drums sound great and his solos deserve double takes each time! The songs are really interesting and memorable which is unusual so many times, especially among trio formatted groups. There is very definite structure, but there are some great ?out? moments in virtually every song. My favorites are the title-track and ?Percolate.? These are the more funky upbeat ones. But I also love listening to the more subtle tunes. Well done gentleman!!
Anyway, hopefully everyone will go out and buy these albums to support these two great contributors to drumming. Has anyone else an opinion?
Take Care All. F.S.

hey frank,
i believe there was a thread on dave's new album release a big rant about how quite a few ppl hated his music or something like that...check it out
Its good that your looking at it from more of a positive light as im sure in the end, the musicianship will be top notch
As for altered...man!!!! i've got a compilation vcd of some videos steve posted from them playing at the potato a long time ago..and also that altered in the studio! i can't get enough of them and as soon as august 1st hits (allowance $$ comes) im gonna buy both their albums!
im also looking to buy Dave's album too...i remember dave played that half time shuffle song at the clinic and of course cited the late great jeff porcaro as his influence for that one!
